Learning About The Industry of Games

Game Developer Club

At DeVry university there are a few students who are interested in games. Not just interested in playing them but creating them. So the question became how do we connect with others who are interested in game development.

Enter Game Developer Club, or GDC.

A place where like minded individuals can come together to share in their interest of game making. We cover everything from programming to 3d design and 2d graphics. Opening the doors to anyone interested in learning about the Game Industry as a whole.

We are also going one step farther. Networking. We offer the students a chance on developing a network with other students and industry professionals.

Our goal is to help students interested in every aspect of Game design and development as well as keep them up to date on the latest happenings in the game industry.

So jump on board and join us in learning about  the fast growing and ever evolving industry of Games.

Up and Coming Events for the Club

Hey all,

Just a quick recap of Yesterday’s meeting, and the upcoming events over the next couple of weeks:
Thursday, May 10thGameDevDrinkup - A pub night with lots of local industry professionals. It’s starts at 8PM and is at Vickery Park in Plano TX. Check the Event link for more information. This is a great chance to network and start getting your name out there.
Saturday, May 19th – DeVry’s High School “Open House”. We are responsible for manning the “Game trailer” which is a giant trailer full of game systems, controllers, etc. We must man/watch the game truck and run little “games” with incentives. For example, scoring X points gets you Y candy. I (Ray) think this is very lame and will try to talk to the administrating to see what rules we can bend.
I’ll have more details after I talk to the administration, but we still need volunteers! So far I have the following:
Open House Volunteers:
Jorge Pineda
Patrick Vanderputt
May 22th – “Pong tourney” – Grand Prize $25 Gamestop cert.  This is the only one that is all us. We will hopefully have the commons 12pm – 3pm. Along with the main game we will have Kentic tennis and Shatter for PS3 as waiting area games. If anyone wants to help with that please let us know.
Running this event is Jorge and Patrick.
This helps count as our community service (For both our club requirement and your upgrade from pledge to member), so reply to this e-mail or contact one of us if you’re interested in helping. We haven’t been given a time frame for the event yet. I’ll get those out to everybody as soon as it gets to me. I apologize for the haste (This was seriously dropped on us!).
Friday, June 1stDeVry Nationwide Halo Reach/Forza Motorsport tournament: More of a fun event for us, we’ll be competing nationwide against other DeVry campuses in matches of Halo Reach and Forza Motorsport for Xbox 360. it’s from 12 – 3PM. Help represent DeVry Dallas! Check the Link for more info. Even if you’re terrible at Halo, it’s a good opportunity to unwind after a long week of classes. I’ll provide snacks/beverages.
Tuesday, June 12th – 12 – 1PM in room 234: Next Club meeting! We’ll be discussing and planning some of the future events, as well as setting up the mentorship program. It’s important to attend this meeting. Help us spread the word in class!
Thursday/Friday June 28th/29th – Tour of Motus Digital: At the meeting, we agreed that the Thursday/Friday after finals would be best for setting up a tour of Motus Digital (A big motion capture studio in Plano, TX). I will be talking to Kyle a little more about this at Thursday’s GameDevDrinkUp and will pass along the information as it’s finalized.
Wow, we’re busy for just starting back up! If anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to get in contact with Rae or Ray. We’d be more than glad to talk to you and work things out.
Thanks a lot for helping this club become great. We’ll be in touch soon.

NEXT CLUB MEETING

Yes, we finally have a room for next week Tuesdays meeting. It is room 234. Remember 12 -1.

I’ll be going over events that are coming up and what I except from everyone. Also we have been cleared for the Pong Tournament but the room is still pending.

I also want to give a shout out to Jorge for stepping up and volunteering to help with the Ping Pong tournament that DeVry hosted today. This is what I’m talking about, helping out!

So a recap.

Next week May 7th Tuesday meeting room 234 12 – 1 be there to learn of awesomeness!

Volunteer Events Opportunities

Hey Guys,

I have a few volunteer events set up so anyone who’d like to join. I have one for this May 3rd Thursday from 4 to 6. They need judges and watchers. This is last minute so if you can’t make it no worries. I need to know by the end of tomorrow if you can help. Either reply by e-mail or come see me in the bookstore for a volunteer form.

The next one I know for sure is June 1st. DeVry is going to have 35 campuses nationwide doing a game tournament with Halo Reach and some racing game I’ve never heard of. It’ll be on a Friday from 6 to 9pm. They need people to help run the event and people the day before to test equipment. I need to know who can help by the end of week 3.

The final possible one is actually in three weeks on May 19th Saturday. I’m still a little schetchy on the details. From what I know DeVry is holding an open house for high schoolers. There will be a game van set up and they need some people to help run it. We also are allowed to do thing as well the catch is that it can’t be a competition. So I have a few ideas on what we can do. If you’re interested then get in contact with me by Wednesday of next week. I have to write a proposal for this thing guys, so any help would be great.

Finally in closing: We will be having a meeting next week. May 7th Tuesday 12 – 1. Room still yet to be announced, so keep an eye out here for updates. Also we have been cleared for the pong tournament in the commons. So the people who wanted to head that up please contact me soon.

Deadlight by Tequila Works

Screenshot of Game

There are very few Post-apocalyptic or zombie games that I really like. Left 4 dead 2 and Infamous are my personal fave. So when I came across  Deadlight I was skeptical. There are a slew of these type games out there so how is Deadlight going to stand out.

Deadlight is a side scrolling, platform, Puzzle game. It’s got a very grungy feel. Add on the almost beautiful darkness and the game looks very pleasing to the eye. Then there’s the gameplay.

Though not official out yet there has been a release of the gameplay. It looks to me to be very fluid. I absolutely love the idea of turning a game like this into a side scroller.

So if you’re interested in Indie Games. Check this one out. You can even follow them on Facebook.
